Geological heritage is defined as the set of natural resources, mostly non-renewable, among which we can find rock formations, geological structures, sedimentary accumulations, landforms, or mineral, petrological or paleontological deposits, which allow to recognize, study and interpret the field the evolution of the geological history of the Earth. In a broad sense, it is assumed that this function may also represented by the places where evidence of the active processes that transform the planet and, on the other hand, the public spaces and equipment where a part of the real geological heritage is exposed, preserved or studied.
Geological heritage of each territory forms a mosaic of great interest that we have at our disposal. The first step to know, value and promote measures for the conservation of geological heritage is its inventory and description. GEOCAMP wants to contribute to this goal.
Choosing the places where fieldwork activities can be carried out has to do with particular interests of Geology enthusiasts and researchers. However, fieldtrips made in the different levels of education have more to do with:
- the contents of the subjects that we are studying
- the regional geology of the nearest surroundings
- time availability for field activities
- accessibility of the sites according to the kind of transport used
No matter the chosen site is, it is important to locate the area from a geographic point of view and to know in advance the regional geologic characteristics.
